ARTISTS + INSTITUTIONS: Common Ground
ARTISTS + INSTITUTIONS: Common Ground was a live public participatory event at the Schindler House, organized by MAK Center Director Kimberli Meyer, and artists David Burns of Fallen Fruit and Sara Daleiden of the Los Angeles Urban Rangers. The program featured artist Sarah Beadle and Notch, an ensemble collective that produces ephemeral culinary and service interventions. Artist Christina Sanchez produced dialogical prompts for public discussion. The public was invited to join in table discussions hosted by special guest artists and representatives of art institutions of Los Angeles.

When R.M. Schindler’s landmark Kings Road House was built in 1922 in what was a yet to be fully developed area of Los Angeles, it must have been an exotic encounter for passersby. Artist Ann Trondson’s performance was an inquiry into how this radically different building may have been experienced. What would it have been like to come upon such an extraordinary house, particularly at night?
Sound. at the Schindler House 2012: Tape Music
Co-presented by the MAK Center and SASSAS, sound. at the Schindler House: Tape Music was a rare concert of music composed for reel-to-reel tape. The unique architecture of the Schindler House created multiple areas in which this historic form was revisited.

For Out Spoken: Lectures from the SCI-Arc Media Archive, the MAK Center invited noted architects and scholars to mine the rich history of public presentations hosted by the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc).
Duchamp the Messenger
The MAK Center hosted a free form, ten-session seminar with art historian Thierry de Duve on the passage from the Fine Arts system to the contemporary art world, which de Duve calls the ‘’Art-in-General system.”

Two Cabins by JB is a project-based publication that documented and analyzed a recent body of work by critically acclaimed filmmaker James Benning, edited by Julie Ault.
Analog: Among Nations (Mostly) by Renée Petropoulos
Performed by five women, this piece was a sound work composed of spoken word, recorded songs, voice, and various other composed recordings both found and created. Image, color, and projected text used the architecture of the Schindler House as the frame for the performance and the improvisation occurring within.
A Composite Field
In conjunction with the MAK Center, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) presented A Composite Field, a new work by Yann Novak and Taisha Paggett at the Mackey Garage Top. Curated by Dino Dinco, this work brought together sound and installation artist Novak and choreographer and dancer Paggett.
