MAK Games 2014

The second annual MAK Games, a tennis tournament that benefits the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, was held at the Sheats/Goldstein house. Guests enjoyed cocktails, bar-b-que, music, and tours of the house while cheering on their favorite team.

Sound. at the Schindler House 2014: Space as Raw Material

The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS), in conjunction with the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, presented sound. at the Schindler House 2014: Space as Raw Material with Woody Sullender, Odeya Nini and Carmina Escobar. Space as Raw Material embraced the intersections of divergent creative practices, including architecture and sound, performance and installation.

LACE, ONE Archives and the MAK Center presented a screening of recent video work by Doug Ischar alongside videos by Bruce and Norman Yonemoto from the 1980s. The program included Ischar’s brb (2007), and Alone With You (2011), recently part of the 2014 Whitney Biennial, and Bruce and Norman Yonemoto’s Garage Sale II (1980), and Vault (1984).

The Reemergence of Tony Greene

The curators of four exhibitions featuring the work of Tony Greene: Judie Bamber and Monica Majoli (Schindler House), David Evans Frantz (Made in LA/Hammer), Richard Hawkins and Catherine Opie (Whitney Biennial), and John Neff (Iceberg Projects) discussed the reemergence of the late artist’s work, its relevance today, and how it can be framed in a contemporary discourse. They also offered a contextualization of the artist’s work in the realm of his personal world.

The workshops highlighted urban patterns and complemented them with political reflection in the form of comic drawings. Visitors were asked to come by the Mackey Apartments and talk about their mobility and/or migration experiences. Or, more simply, answer the question “How did you get here/there?”
