Upon invitation to return to Los Angeles and work with any local practitioner of his choosing, Vienna-based former MAK Center artist-in-residence Marko Lulić reached out to L.A.-based artist Sam Durant—since the 1990s the two have found a promising overlap in the way their practices have used historical reference as part of their long-term, contemporary political engagements.

Sound. at the Schindler House 2015: Charles Curtis
SASSAS presented internationally renowned cellist Charles Curtis performing the world premiere of a new work by Carolyn Chen, and the Los Angeles premiere of works by Alison Knowles and Christian Wolff, plus works by Morton Feldman and Tobias Hume

Creating Space for Immersion in Group Dynamics
The MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House and GREX presented a three-day intensive experiential group relations conference in the Tavistock tradition. In the spirit of architect R.M. Schindler’s experimentation with social space as well as built space, the conference explored social dynamics in a unique architectural structure. Unlike conferences featuring panel discussions and lectures, this conference was structured to create an environment in which participants learned directly from experience. Small group, large group, and inter-group events gave conference members opportunities to experience and reflect on powerful group dynamics as they unfolded. Meetings designed for review and application provided further opportunities for understanding and integrating the learning into everyday life.
Scott Benzel: Op. 21: Inner Experience Fellowship/Friends of Crime
The MAK Center presented a new work by composer Scott Benzel: Op. 21: Inner Experience Fellowship/Friends of Crime prepared for piano, vintage electronics, guitar, experimental percussion, tape loop, gong, and central mixing station. The one-day only, 9-hour performance took place at the Schindler-designed Fitzpatrick-Leland House.
MAK Games 2015
The MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House was pleased to announce its Third Annual MAK Games, a benefit tournament that combined tennis, architecture, art, cocktails, barbecue, and a fabulous party, held at the spectacular Sheats/Goldstein Residence designed by John Lautner.
Memes: A Queer Nation Panel / Sticker Making Workshop
Memes convened former Los Angeles Queer Nationals to talk about the group’s historic use of slogans and stickers as a form of social protest and aesthetic intervention. The panel discussion was followed by a sticker-making workshop.
Palm Capsule: Conceived and compiled by Christian Mayer
For this event only, contributions to the Palm Capsule were displayed at the Mackey Garage Top before going underground the next day.
A Vast Furniture: Lecture by Kim Stringfellow
In conjunction with the A Vast Furniture exhibition on view at the Schindler House, artist Kim Stringfellow presented a lecture on historical and contemporary instances of homesteading in the California desert, from her Jackrabbit Homesteads project examining the relics of the Small Tract Act of 1938 to the community behind current placemaking efforts in the Mojave Desert.
A Vast Furniture: Nature Walk / Your Guide to Living in the West
The artist and MAK Center staff led a guided walking tour of the Kings Road gardens and landscaping. Looking at a 1932 site plan, they discussed Schindler’s intentions and choices in designing the grounds, and the logic of the preservation process that later followed.
